Participant Statement

hello
i
am a graphic designer practicing in richmond virginia
i have
as much concern for the temperature of the earth
as i do for the space between letterforms
my process is eighty percent analogue and twenty percent digital
an incomplete list of my favorite tools and materials :
stencils — plastic, metal and hand cut

( a few are gifts from far away places )
paint gouache plaka
( i wish i could find and grind natural pigments )
permanent ink
( doesn’t smear when dry )

cotton paper
( doesn’t yellow )
brown craft paper
( makes a nice sound when torn )
wheat paste
( flour and sugar mixed with water and sticks to metal )
an awl
( a mysterious gift from japan )
mirado black warrior pencils
( it is round with two hearts )

educated by formalists i am one
or
perhaps it is better to say i am always trying to become one
for it is a high and humbling hurdle
