Camryn Carels
Camryn Carels graduated from VCU in 2021 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Interior Design.
She was an integral part of the Patterns of Place research team, serving as a research assistant from 2019 - 2021. Her work was supported by the Federal Work Study program and VCU Interior Design Department. Camryn is now practicing interior design in Maine and is an active outdoorswoman. During the fall 2019 semester, she created an interactive pattern that allows the user to interact with and manipulate pattern elements.
My interactive wallpaper allows the audience to interact with the pattern elements which then changes the pattern itself. The wallpaper is designed with multiple colors in a gradient circle. The top layer is a triangle-shaped piece of mahogany wood attached to a spinning mechanism. This piece of wood is attached to the printed circle on the paper. Due to its mobility, the triangular element covers up a select color or part of the colorful circles below. This allows a new pattern and texture to form and creates multiple patterns within one wallpaper. The pattern explores pattern through the study of color (bold, complimentary), geometry (circles, squares, diamonds, triangles), positive and negative space, material (ink, paper, wood, plastic), and texture.
